A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC Ugwumba Uche Nwosu,, has called on Nigerians to give President Ahmed Bola Tinubu the necessary support to end the ongoing killings in parts of the country, especially, in Benue and Plateau States.
Ugwumba Nwosu, who made the call while addressing newsmen on Saturday in Abuja, added that President Tinubu is determined to put stop to the killings but needs the support of all and saundry
While commending the President on his recent directives to the security agencies to halt activities of the marauders, the Former Chief of Staff to the Imo State Government was optimistic the Presidential order would yield positive results towards restoration of peace and tranquility in the country.
He said, “I think these are my takes on the killing. But actually speaking, I also have to commend the President of Nigeria, Ahmed Bola Tinubu. He has also put our motion in work to make sure that these killings are stopped.
“He (Tinubu) has had meetings with the security chiefs and I have heard the NSA say that the President has given them directives that these killings must stop and they are doing it.
“So I think it is something that all of us need to work together to solve it.”
Ugwumba Nwosu, however rejected calls from some quarters that Nigeria should be given the license to start bearing firearms.
According to him, “When individuals start carrying arms, it means that everybody will have arms in their house.
“Some people can easily get angry and when people get angry, they can do what they are not supposed to do. So nobody will allow and suggest that people should be allowed to carry arms and walk around. That is not human rights.”
On the recent cross carpeting of politicians, especially the mass decamping of PDP members into APC, he described the development as democracy in action.
He said, “It’s democracy. The picture of democracy is the influence and the political arithmetic that happens in political parties. People from PDP decamping to the APC is not seen as a bad omen at all.
“It is something we need to accept in a democratic society. Even in the modern world, people can decamp from one party to another. Not actually moving from one party to another becomes evil.
“So it is not something new in a democratic society. So if people choose to decamp from PDP to APC or APC to APGA or PDP to Labour Party, it is normal thing and it is their choice what they want to do. And probably they have seen that where they are is not good enough for them and they are moving to a better place where they can pursue their ambition.
So I don’t see it as any bad thing. ”
On whether he was not afraid the development can leal Nigeria into becoming a one party state, he said, “If people from another party are moving to another party, it does not mean that everybody in that party has moved.”
He recalled that, “Remember that when President Ahmed Tinubu was in Alliance for Democracy, AD,, he was the only Governor of that political party. And that does not mean that PDP, which is a party power at that time, has made the country a one party system.
“So I totally agree with that. We still have governors from PDP who are in Labour Party and we have governors who are in APGA. So we still have them.”
On other elected officer holders decamping with their manifestoes into APC, he said most of the political parties affected by this decamping are as result of the crisis in the party, adding, “And then if your party is in crisis, it means that your manifesto is also a crisis.
“So for you to have a conducive atmosphere to work with, you must seek for another platform where you can have a sector where you can operate and work. The party you are talking about is in a crisis.
“All of us know that PDP is in crisis. So if you have a party that is in crisis and you are talking about manifestos, you should be able to have a house that is together before you can talk of having somebody who will think of manifestos.
“If your house is not in order, how can you unify that house?”
On the assessment of APC led administration in the last two years, especially the poverty in the country, Nwosu said the administration is doing its best to address the issue of hungry by resolving to prioritize the food security.
He said , “We have seen that there are some remedies for food prices in the market.”
He however noted that two years was not enough to judge the performance of Mr. President in the office. “So I don’t judge somebody within one year. One year is not enough to judge somebody.
“I only judge a person after four years in office. Then you can come back and ask if he has performed well. So I think we should give him a break for three years or three and a half years.
“Then we cannot come back and then articulate what he has done. I have seen most of the things he has created. South-East, South-South, North-West and North-Central Development Commissions.
“These are commissions to bring development closer to the people. I have seen most of the work he is doing. There are quite a number of things he has done.
“So we should give him three years. After three years, we can come back and then write to people and say how far has Mr President performed. But for now, we should give him three years in office before we can come and judge him.”
On agitation for powe shit to the North, he said, he is is in 100 percent of the Southern part of the country to retain power beyond 2027.
According to him, “I am 100% in support of the South. So why should we, at this point in time, start talking about power going back to the North? It’s okay. So it is justifiable that the South should complete its 8 years before we talk about power shifting.
“So those who are agitating that the power should go back to the North are selfish. They are being selfish. Those people are being selfish, they are not true Nigerians.
“If you’re a true Nigerian, you should make sure that things are done normally. But anybody who is agitated that the power should leave the South to the North, when the South is there to complete, its 8 years. The people not being fair.
“So I am totally against it. I am totally for the South to complete its 8 years. And whoever is wanting to take power at this point in time is not a patriot and is not a true Nigerian.”
Speaking on the position of Ndigbo producing the president of Nigeria, Nwosu admitted that for now when the Southerner in he person of Ahmed Bola Tinubu is the President of Nigeria, there is nothing like agitating for a President of Ibo extraction.
“When you talk about Ndigbo producing its President, it’s not going to be Ndigbo president for now. It’s going to be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But I am a member of APC.
“We have a President already. So let’s allow President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to finish his tenure as a president before we can talk about another president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So that doesn’t arise for now”, he said.
On leaders of opposition parties like Atiku Abubakar, El-Rufai and others coming together to form a coalition against Tinubu ahead of 2027, he said , Nwosu said, “Of course, we are in a democratic setting.
“To have opposition forming a coalition does not mean that they are taking over power. They should form a coalition. That’s the sweetness of democracy.
“But the thing is that a coalition will later take over from APC. That’s totally not true. Because APC is not a party which can become an opposition coalition.
“What we are talking about is a strong party and one of the biggest parties in Africa. So for me, I don’t see any challenge in APC that we shouldn’t sleep with our eyes closed. That does not give us a challenge in APC.
“A coalition is good. But I don’t think that even the coalition will come together as one to take over their position. Because I see different people with different ideas.
“The coalition, I have never seen it as people that will come with one voice. If you look at everybody, everybody has their own interests. You just mentioned the interest of taking the power to the north.
“Some of them are coming because they want the power back to the North. Some of them are coming because they want the power returned to the South. So what matters is that the government of the day, led by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is a patriotic.
“And then a coalition or no coalition does not stop it from doing what it needs to do.”
