There is palpable tension in the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike , Abia state over supply of contaminated water at the hostel area.
Investigations by our correspondent reveals that the students in the affected hostels are predominately first years students who have been made to cope with the supply of contaminated water by the University authority over two months now since resumption on the 6th of October.
it was alleged that the authorities exhibited a non challant attitude towards the incidence, perhaps waiting for an epidemic to occur before it can swing to action and save the lives of innocent students who are freshers.
Our findings indicates that because the set of students involved were fresh men and women who could not distinguish their left from their right , the university authorities never gave it the urgent attention it deserves.
Some of the students who spoke to our Correspondent and pleaded anonymity alleged that they have severally reported the incidence of contaminated water in their hostels to the University authorities after reacting to the water but we’re ignored.
One of the Anonymous said “We had reported to the authori, but because we are new students , they refused to urgently address such dangerous incidence that had led to many of our students falling ill, stooling and vomiting blood , we are appealing to the university authorities to urgently address this to avoid an epidermis”
The students accused the University authorities of insensitivity and not prioritizing their health and well being .
It will be recalled that such a similar incidence of supply of contaminated water in the hostels and lodge occurred in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri mid this year , it took the intervention of high government officials before the university could address it.
The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, management should not wait for an epidemic before it can address such life threatening disease.
At the time of press , efforts to reach the University Public Relation Officer , Mr. Chimaraoke Best Ibeh were unsuccessful.
