The North East Women for Peace, NEWP, has commended the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for initiating a welfare-focused programme aimed at improving the economic wellbeing of families of military personnel.
The group in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its President, Saratu Gambo, praised Gen. Oluyede for seeking the approval and support of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, through the Defence Headquarters, to engage financial institutions in providing soft loan schemes for spouses of service personnel at highly reduced interest rates.
The group described the initiative as timely and strategic, noting that it demonstrates the military leadership’s commitment to the welfare of service families.
According to the statement, the proposed loan scheme will enable spouses of military personnel to access affordable financing, thereby empowering them economically, reducing financial stress, and promoting household stability.
The group noted that improved welfare for military families would have a direct positive impact on the morale, focus, and operational effectiveness of troops deployed across various theatres of operation in defence of the country.
“The sacrifices made by officers and men of the Armed Forces are enormous, and initiatives such as this go a long way in boosting their morale and dedication to national service,”the statement said.
North East Women for Peace added that the initiative reflects an understanding that national security is not only achieved on the battlefield but also through sustained investment in the welfare of those who support the troops from the home front.
The group further applauded the President and Commander-in-Chief for his consistent support for policies and programmes aimed at uplifting members of the Armed Forces and their families.
It expressed optimism that the successful implementation of the soft loan scheme would set a new benchmark for military welfare interventions and further strengthen the confidence, loyalty, and fighting spirit of troops safeguarding the nation.
