The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu has directed heads of agencies under the ministry to prioritize funding of publicity of their activities in order to change public perception of the sector.
Adelabu, who spoke in Abuja, insisted that funding was sacrosanct in the quest to attract good image to the sector.
Noting that “No good things come without finance”, the minister was equivocal that some critical issues militating against the sector such as power thefts, vandalization and others must be given adequate and well deserved publicity for the public to know.
Adelabu argued that he was assigning the responsibility of funding of the communications initiative to agencies’ heads since they have access to more funds, handling of projects and fatter budgetary allocations more than the ministry.
Speaking on backdrop of recently inaugurated Power Sector Communications Team, PSCT, a strategic initiative designed to bridge the gap between power sector and the general public, the minister noted that, “We must fund this initiative, otherwise, it will not achieve its purpose or objective.”
According to him, “The agencies have projects, they have bigger and fatter budgets, so that is what we need to do. Then lastly, which is the most important, is the funding for this. No good things come without finance.”
“So, I know that a number of the heads of agencies are not present. I know they have representatives. But most of them are present. I want to appeal to you.
“Fine. Power ministry is the father of all. They will all realize it is the poorest of all. We will do the little we can from the ministry’s perspective. From the ministry’s purse. But I’m appealing to the heads of agencies to pay attention and support the funding of this initiative.”
He added that people will not blow your trumpet for you. Even if they see your performance. They will be quick to shout and criticize your downside or your bad side.
“But they will only ignore your good side or your achievements. They would rather just keep quiet. Except it becomes so overwhelming, visible and obvious”, he said.
