Ahead of the February 21st, 2026 Abuja Municipal Area Council election, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Dr. Obina Simon has pledged to shur up the revenue base of the council if elected.

Obina who disclosed that he will not rely only on the monthly allocation from the federation account, said he will increase the internal Generated Revenue (IGR) of the council to enable him execute developmental projects within the council.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja Thursday , the SDP Candidate who criticized the incumbent chairman , Christopher Maikalangu for poor performance and abandoning infrastructure development said he has the right credentials and experience to transform the area council.

Dr Obina who decried the high level of racketeering in the area council noted that he will digitalize the internal Generated Revenue, IGR, process to curb curb corruption and save money for the council.

” What we realized that is happening in AMAC is that some portion of revenue is used to compensate some politicians, I don’t have problem with that , there should be an arrangement with the government , it has to be just , you don’t take 70 percent and the council will take 30 percent, no , it doesn’t make sense.

“We will work with the consultants , because we are creating jobs . A consultant must declare what he has collected and we agree , no , it must go digitalized, we have to find out what the consultants collected . I can be in my office and press the screen and know what the consultants collected .

” We must digitalize it to check mate corruption . Anything collected must go to the council account. You cannot come and say , this is what I collected , no ”

Similarly, the SDP Candidate hinted that he will declare a state of emergency on the education sector expressing regret over the deplorable condition of primary school in the Abuja Mini Area Council, AMAC

” For education remember, I told you , I am a professional teacher, I have taught for seven and eight years in Kastina . I am going to declare a state of emergency in education in AMAC, where pupils sit on the floor.

” If education fails under my watch , it is a slap on my face.

There is a school where we went in Nyaya they converted that school to a toilet, where they defecate and urinate because they don’t have a toilet , does it show professionalism of the teachers and headmaster, for education I made it a point of call that public school will compete with private school”

He , however called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to conduct a free and fair election.

‘This is the first time that an opposition is asking for nothing but free and fair, personally I am not asking for anybody to come and help me rig election , the only favour I am asking is let the election be free and fair, we are not supposed to be beging for that, but is the incumbent begging for the same thing , I don’t know, their credibility is on the line .

This FCT election is a litmus test for INEC and 2027. We have communicated to all the embassies to also draw their attention to this particular exercise, I believe that INEC do the right thing”
